ABOUT THE PROJECT
A NEW ERA FOR BUILDING RENOVATION AND CONSTRUCTION
RADIANCE is a Horizon Europe project developing robotic, automated, and digital solutions that make building renovation and new construction safer, faster, and more sustainable.
As Europe accelerates its Renovation Wave and climate goals, the sector needs smarter tools that support workers, reduce risks, and increase efficiency. RADIANCE brings together advanced robotics, AI-driven inspection, digital twins, and innovative safety systems to meet that challenge.
WHY RADIANCE?
Renovation today is often slow, costly, and labour-intensive, with significant safety risks and environmental impact. Many buildings require assessment and repair, but existing methods rely heavily on manual work and fragmented processes.
RADIANCE directly addresses these challenges by integrating intelligent technologies that enhance:
- Inspection and diagnosis
- Repair and refurbishment operations
- Human–robot collaboration and on-site safety
- Planning, logistics, and resource optimisation
WHAT RADIANCE WILL DELIVER
RADIANCE develops a suite of next-generation tools, including:
Robotic Systems
- Autonomous inspection drones
- Cable-robot systems for façade repair, crack stitching, and automated spraying
- Quadruped robots for monitoring and logistics support
AI and Automation
- AI-based defect detection and assessment
- Predictive models for safety and workflow optimisation
- Automated decision-support tools
Digitalisation Tools
- A digital twin platform integrating BIM, sensor data, simulation, and site information
- Logistics and planning optimisation models
- Worker-support technologies including AR-based guidance and C-ITS communication tools
Advanced Monitoring & NDE
- Multiphysics Non-Destructive Evaluation probes
- Automated structural condition analysis
Together, these tools form a modular, interoperable ecosystem that supports the entire renovation workflow, from inspecting a façade to planning and executing repair actions.
WHERE RADIANCE WILL BE TESTED
The solutions will be validated through three real-world scenarios in European buildings:
- Inspection, Diagnosis & Renovation:
Testing drones, NDE tools, cable-robot systems, and AI-based assessment. - Human–Robot Collaboration & Safety:
Validating AR/VR systems, worker-support tools, and predictive safety functions. - Construction Optimisation & Logistics:
Integrating digital twins, quadrupeds, and optimisation tools to support on-site efficiency.
EXPECTED IMPACT
By the end of the project, RADIANCE aims to achieve:
- Safer work environments through advanced sensing, monitoring, and AR-based assistance.
- Faster and more accurate renovation workflows, reducing rework and delays.
- Optimised use of materials and resources, contributing to greener construction practices.
- Better decision-making, supported by AI and real-time digital models.
- Higher productivity and improved job quality for workers on-site.
Ultimately, RADIANCE supports Europe’s transition toward sustainable, digital, and resilient built environments.
A STRONG EUROPEAN CONSORTIUM
RADIANCE brings together leading universities, research centres, SMEs, industry partners, and public organisations from across Europe; combining robotics expertise, construction knowledge, digital innovation, and safety research to drive real impact.
